napoli flegreaunderwater park of gaiola type:archaeological/landscape interest:
The islet of Gaiola, situated between the fall of Trentaremi and Marechiaro, is one of the most striking places in the coast of Posillipo and an historical, cultural and natural heritage of great relevance. Since 2002 this site has been declared protected marine area and, together with that one of Baia, is the only one in Italy characterized by natural and archaelogical elements. Here, indeed, were found the ruins of some buildings related to the imperial villa of Pausilypon, first belonged to Vedio Pollione and then to Augusto. These buildings are now underwater for the effects of bradisism. The underwater landscape is rich in biological unicellular organisms that live among the tuff rocks and the Roman ancient ruins. There are also many different species of green and blue algae. The ichthyic fauna, instead, is characterized by the presence of sea thrushes, moray eels, octopuses, sea urchins, mussels and patellas.
