napoli flegreacamaldoli: panoramic viewpoint on the Flegrean Fields and on the Neapolitan Gulf type:landscape interest:
The hill of Camaldoli is the highest place in the city of Naples, with an altitude of 452 meters on the sea level. The whole hill, originated 35.000 years ago because of the violent eruptions on the Flegrean Fields, is part of the Archiflegreo, a volcanic system that has its core in Agnano. The Southern side, that overlooks on the quarter of Soccavo, is characterized by tuff steep drops, while the opposite side has a light fall covered by a thick vegetation. The name “Camaldoli” derives from the presence of a monastery of the 16th century and the hill is famous for its extraordinary outlook on the gulfs of Naples and Pozzuoli, the Vesuvio, the coast of Sorrento, Cape Posillipo and Nisida. In the cleanest days it is possible to see the Circeo, Roccamonfina, the Pontine islands and Matese mountains from one of the panoramic viewpoints that are in the Urban Park of Camaldoli, opened to the public since 1996.
