Here we are in Baia! It was one of the most popular places during ancient Roman period, famous because of the fashionable life. At that period it was VIP people that could afford a villa in Baia. Today we can only see a little part of the big spa that was built there. Many buildings are still under the land or under the sea level because of the well known bradyseism phenomenon.
In the archaeological park it is possible to see: the Villa dell’ambulatio, very close to the entry;the Settore di Mercurio, large spa room named after a temple dedicated to the gods messenger; the Complesso della Sosandra, where it was found a statue of Aphrodite and the Settore di Venere that is named this way because of the Temple presence – today out of the archaeological area – and because of the sexy images found in the “Terme Inferiori”.
It is very interesting the broken dome of the Tempio di Diana, having a diameter of 30 meters it is probably the biggest of the Roman period. All those elements allow us to understand how wonderful and excellent was the technological level of Romans.
Submerged Archaeological Park of Baia Flegrea coast, from Posillipo to Cuma, has ever been affected by bradyseism phenomena that, during the years, have made land level moving up and down on the sea level.
The area in front of the Baia port - together with Palazzo degli Spiriti in Posillipo, Serapeo in Pozzuoli and Sacello degli Augustali in Miseno – is a classic example of submerged archaeological site. The submerged Baia Park includes also the finds from Punta Epitaffio and the ruins from Portus Julius, that is close to Lucrino Lake. Since 2002, together with Gaiola, it is a protected sea area. A special boat with transparent bottom allows having a look at submerged Villa of Lucio Calpurnio Pisone and the domus named Villa with protiro, more than roads and port.
