napoli flegrea pausilypon and grotta di seiano
type: archaeological/historic/landscape
interest:

The hill of Posillipo, that divides the gulf of Naples from that one of Pozzuoli, is the result of many volcanic eruptions happened during the centuries. The eruptive activity that originates Posillipo and part of the Flegrean area, began about 2 millions years ago and, just in the last 35.000 years, in the whole area have been originated about 40 little volcanoes, among which those ones of Astroni, Agnano, Nisida and Trentaremi. On the top of the hill of Posillipo, at the end of Viale Virgilio, you can see the monumental entry of the Virgilian Park, also called Rimembranza Park. Many panoramic viewpoints allow to admire the gulfs of Naples and Pozzuoli with, on one side, the Vesuvio, the coast of Sorrento and the island of Capri and, on the other, the whole Flegrean area. After a long period of negligence, the Park has been opened again to the public in 2002, renovated in its pavements, lighting and green areas. There are also many fountains, well-equipped places for children and a bowl for cultural performances.
