pozzuoli e cumathe sepulchral areas of pozzuoli and quarto type:archaeological interest:
The sepulchral areas of the Roman towns were generally situated on the outskirts or along the main streets which led to the centre of the town. Pozzuoli follows the same rules. Recent excavations brought to the light several necropolis. One of them is situated at Via Celle in the upper areas of the town, near the Annunziata Place. The structures found in that area, like the “Colombarium”, used to accommodate cinerary urns, were employed to store the bodies of citizens who belonged to different social classes. In Via San Vito it is possible to see a few mausoleums and several funeral buildings with different levels, which used to be ordered by well-born families. Near Via Vecchia delle Vigne there are visible remains of a sanctuary, probably dedicated to Hercules, and the mausoleum of doctor Menander. Other necropolis have been found in the present town of Quarto, precisely in Brindisi street. Among the discovered structures what is really interesting is the so called “Fescina”, a tomb with a pyramidal cusp, probably belonged to a family with oriental origins.
