pozzuoli e cumalitaernum and lake patria type:archaeological/landscape interest:
Not that far from the north side of Cuma, near the lake Patria, there are the remains of Liternum founded by the Cumans in 194 B.C.
It was in this place that after the second Punic war, Publio Cornelio Scipione and three-hundred men took refuge. The lake’s name itself remands the famous sentence the Roman general wanted to be put on his tomb: “Ungrateful land, you will not have my body!”
Among the finds it is pointed out a urban plant, the forum, the capitolium and the theatre. Outside the city walls have been found an amphitheatre and a necropolis.
Some historians believe that the town’ s decline was a consequence of the area’s wetlands, probably caused by an anomalous wave.
Currently the area around the lake and the Domitiana coast, are waiting for a convenient tourist redevelopment.
