isole flegreecoasts and beaches of ischia type:landscape interest:
One of the reasons that drives thousands of tourists to go to Ischia during the summer, is certainly its wonderful sea and its beautiful coasts and beaches. The Maronti beach, in the comune of Barano, is 3 km long and is the longest beach of the island. At its back there are some pits: the most famous is the so-called Dark Pit, from which flow thermal water. In the past centuries this placed was used by pirates as docking, thanks to the depth of the sea. This beach leads directly to Sant’Angelo, where, between the mainland and the islet there is a beautiful sandy tract. The comune of Forio hosts the beach of Citara, famous for the presence of the thermal baths “Poseidon’s gardens”. A legend tells that this place was under the protection of Venus Citarea; another myth tells, instead, that Ulysses passed by this coast. Not far from Citara, between two headlands, there is the Cava beach known for its dark sand that recalls the volcanic origin of the island. Near the harbor of Forio there is the San Francesco beach. Punta Caruso is the backdrop to this wonderful place rich in sport equipment and typical restaurants. Another well-attended beach is San Montano’s bay in Lacco Ameno, where there is the thermal park “Negombo” and where, according to a legend, disembarked Saint Restituta, then elected patron of the island. Near here there is the Varulo beach, reachable just by sea. Going on along the coast, you can reach he Fungo beach in Lacco Ameno, so-called for the presence of a rock similar to a mushroom in its shape. In Casamicciola there is Bagnitielli beach, famous for its so visited thermal centre. In Ischia Porto the Lido beach, near the little square, is full of bathers during the whole summer, while the English people’s beach and the Cartaromana’s bay, opposite to the Aragonese castle, are most attended by a more demanding but less worldly public. Reachable just by sea is the SaintPancrazio beach and the Love beach. Finally the so-called Scarrupata beach, between Punta Saint Pancrazio and Great Cape, is characterized by a pebbly sand and sheers on the sea.
