pozzuoli e cumathe temple of serapis type: interest:
The Temple of Serapis, so-called for the finding of a statue of the Egyptian god Serapis, is in reality the central structure of the Roman market (Macellum), built between the I and the II century near the harbour of Pozzuoli. This was the place where the food was traded. The whole structure included some lateral workshops that surrounded a great courtyard supported by columns. On the bottom of the structure there was an apse used for the cult of deities. Here it was found the statue of Serapis together with that of the dog Cerbero. In the same place were found the sculptures of Oreste and Elettra and Dioniso and the Fauno. It is possible to see three columns of the pronao in cipolin marble which show the bradyseismic movements in this area. In fact, the presence of mollusks that have eroded the low part of the columns has sustained the movements of the ground and has allowed the geologists to provide interesting information about the positive and negative height differences that has affected Pozzuoli with the passage of time.
